Approx. 1,000 - 2,000 USD will be presented as Hanaoka Seishu Award. Japanese physician Seishu Hanaoka (on the first page of this circular) was the father of anaesthesia. He was born in Kishu,Wakayama and studied medicine in Kyoto. Afterhe returned home, he developed and used an orallyadministered general anaesthetic, a herbal concoctionknown as "Tsusensan" in 1804. Hanaoka successfully operated over 150 patients. He also contributed to treatment such as Jumihaidokuto (anti-histamine agent) and Shiunko (ointment), which are still used by many Japanese doctors.
